The word "tattoo" has Tahitian origins of "tatu" or "tatau". Whether known as tats, ink, art or work, tattoos are one of the oldest forms of body art. In fact, tattooing of the skin in Japan is thought to date back some ten thousand years, back to the Paleolithic era, making it somewhat ironic that among the most popular tattoo designs today, are Japanese Kanji symbols.
As a form of body modification, tattoos are found in virtually every culture and are chosen for reasons ranging from cosmetic, religious, magical or as a means of cultural identity. Modern tribal tattoos, for example, have their origins in Maori and ancient Celtic society. If you wish to investigate further, the University of Wisconsin College Library has a very thorough Research Guide to Tattoos & Body Piercings. In addition, the Santa Monica College Library has a great resources page for Tattoo Research.
